                                       Who Am I?
James Marrugo

My title is a Mental Health Counselor which is the same as a Therapist. I am a guy who has experienced anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and trauma. In essence, I am a normal person who wants to make a difference one person at a time. During high school, I struggled with depression and had been admitted to a hospital for suicide watch. I was miserable and had no idea what to do. I bottled up my thoughts and emotions as much as I could until I would eventually burst. During my college years, I became apathetic and isolated myself socially for 4 years. I struggled to get out of bed and barely had any friends. In my graduate program, I struggled with anxiety. I would often l lose sleep, became irritable, and struggled with my image. I nearly quit graduate school just so I can run and hide from my own problems. I would not have changed any of my life experiences because they made me who I am today.

My Process

I am straightforward and blunt. I avoid sugar-coating my language and expect you to be the same. I want you to be as honest with me as I am with you. I will not let you hide from yourself and I will never let you feel alone with your struggles. I value both my time and yours so I will do my best to make sure every session leaves you with something valuable. I will treat every session as if it will be our last so that my focus is on being as effective and efficient as possible. I do not cut corners nor do I beat around the bush. I take your mental health seriously so I have no intention of letting you become co-dependent on me. You will become more confident in yourself by talking to me. Even though I do not know you, I know you have what it takes to improve your life. You just cannot see it yet.

My Role

My role as your counselor is to shine a light on your blind spots. Your blind spots are the areas in your life where the solutions to your problems reside. By building your self-awareness you can begin to generate positive change in your life. When you generate positive change, you create growth, and with growth comes healing. With enough healing, your pain points become less painful and this creates space for more success and joy.
